Honesty

When I was in eleventh grade, I studied in a school full of rich kids where there were a few humble kids like me. I loved their houses and their parties. They were very popular in the school. Me and my friends always felt bad because the next day people were talking about the party and we felt like we couldn’t participate on the conversation because we didn’t go.  One of the reason I couldn’t go was because of my overprotective mother which didn’t let me go to any of the parties. But one night I decided to go with my friends at any cost to one of the parties. In this night Lucas, one of the rich kids, was going to have a birthday party in his house and everybody that wanted to go, could go. So obviously it was going to be a great party because that meant that all the school, not only the popular kids, where going. To get to the party, me and my friends had a plan. My friend Peter, recently got his driver license. He was the one who was going to drive us there. The other one, Mark, was going to put the money for the gas. And I was in charge of giving the direction to Lucas’s house. For this plan to work, all three of us had to tell our parents that we were going to the movies so that they could give us permission. Recklessly we did it and got the permissions. All was going according to plan, Peter picked us up, Mark put the gas money and I was directing them to the party house. When we got to the house, we were very amazed. There were a lot of the people in the house. There were so many, that some of them had to hang out outside. When we were in front of the house, we were very excited because finally we were going to be part of an awesome party and we could talk about it the next day. Also, we were going to find out what made this parties that the rich kids threw, so cool. We entered the house and it was like a whole new world. There was music, dancing, alcohol and munchies. Unexpectedly, I received a call from my mother asking where we were and if I was ok. I told her that the movie was going to start and that everything was going fine. This was the second time I lied to her. This made me feel a little bit of remorse for what I was doing but I decided to ignore it because I knew that nothing was going to go wrong. After I attended that call, my friends disappeared. I couldn’t find them. So, I got very nervous and started looking around to see if I saw someone recognizable, but I didn’t. Finally, my friends showed up, but they came to me very strange. They were a little bit drunk. They wanted to seize so badly the moment of the party that they forgot that we had to go back to our houses soon. When It was time to go I, preoccupied, gave my friends a lot of water and food so that we were safer on our way back home. But when we were on our way, it seemed like it wasn’t enough. We were zig zagging a lot and scratched the car a little. I was very scared because nothing was going my way that night and my remorse just kept growing. When I, miraculously, got to my house, I had to choose between telling my mom the truth of what happened or telling her how good was the movie I just “saw”. I chose to tell her the truth. This act made me very sad because my mother was disappointed because I lied to her. However, she pardoned me because I took the courage to tell the truth after regretting my actions and recognizing that they were wrong. I didn’t expect that. After this night, I choose to tell the truth to my mom every time when I’m going out with my friends.

Pressure to be saved

"Salvation" is a short story which talks about peer pressure and some religious aspects. The author tells his story about the day he went to his aunt's church where there was happening a celebration where the kids were going to be saved from the sins if they got up and accepted Jesus in their life. This was a bit problematic to the author since he was waiting to see, literally, Jesus but he didn't show up. At the end, he ends up going to the priest but doesn't feel honest about getting up there without seeing any religious revelation.

This essay criticizes how people tend to do things that they don't feel like doing just to satisfy others or to don't let them down. Also it shows that after actions like this, the person doesn't feel well. In the religious aspect, he acts as a kid of poor faith because he decides to not believe in what was happening just because he can't see Jesus. The author begins his essay saying that he was saved from sin since he was thirteen years old but that he didn't believe that because he lied at the celebration. This also shows the heaviness of a lie in people's life.
I liked this story because it was very controversial and the events can happen at any time in a kid's life. It's one of the basics critics of religion. How can I follow something I don't see? This essay can appeal to many kids but I feel that the real importance of this essay is to do things because you have faith in them and not just because other people told you to do it.

"Girl"

The short story "Girl" is about a mother telling her daughter how she is supposed to be for her to be a good woman. The mother uses a lot of examples about cooking and cleaning that the girl should never forget. The daughter, when she hears all this commands, have questions about what the mother is saying and the mother ends up answering her with no trouble. This story shows the perspective of some parents about how the girls in society should grow up as.
In the story, the mother tells the girl everything as a list of things she has to do to get accepted by society as a successful and complete woman. However, we live in a society were woman can assume any role and doesn't have restrictions on things that they have to do or don't want to do. This also shows that the mother is kind of worried about her daughter (as every parent) and her future because she knows that she isn't going to be all her life with her. Because of this, she reminds her daughter the things that were taught to her when she was a kid for her to be an stereotypical woman. The problem with this is that time changes, and with it, society changes. Another problem presented in the story is the life of expectations that our parents want us to live. This is how parents tell us to live and we think that when do it, they will be satisfied but sometimes it doesn't. There are moments where you just got to live happy for them to be happy or that even when you complete all their expectations, they'll still be unsatisfied telling you to fix this or that.

"Girl" made me use a lot of critical thinking when I analyzed it because what it shows explicitly is just a mother telling her daughter how to do things right. But if we put our shoes on the characters feet , and think about why both are having that dialogue, we can found more symbolic things or controversial things to talk about. Also, the time and place where are written the stories can influence an analysis because then, we have to consider the cultural aspects of the environment where it develops the story.
